What causes yellow nails?

If your nails have a yellowed appearance, you could have a fungal infection.

Fungal infection, or onychomycosis, is caused by an abundance of fungal organisms growing in, on, or underneath your nail. Once an infection develops, it can spread from your nail to other toes and your skin.

In addition to being yellow, fungal infections can cause several nail changes, including:

  • Thickening
  • Ridges or lines
  • Changes in shape
  • Discolored streaks or spots

Fungal nails also give off a faint, unpleasant odor.

How did I get nail fungus?

Onychomycosis is a common condition. This contagious infection can either develop because of fungal organisms that exist on your own body or due to contact with them in the environment.

Several factors can increase your risk of nail fungus, like:

  • Dry and brittle nails due to aging
  • Feet that have been damp or moist for extended periods
  • Damage to your nail or the surrounding skin
  • Being barefoot in areas like locker rooms, pools, or gyms

Certain health conditions also increase your chances of developing fungal nails, including diabetes, circulatory problems, or a weakened immune system.

How is onychomycosis diagnosed and treated?

Dr. Maislos can confirm fungal nails during a physical exam. In some cases, he takes a sample of your skin or surrounding tissue to identify the fungal organism causing your symptoms.

Nail fungus is challenging to treat because the infection can spread inside your nail itself. At Vino Med Spa , Dr. Maislos recommends laser therapy with the PinPointe™ FootLaser® system.

PinPointe FootLaser’s advanced technology penetrates the deepest layers of your nail tissue to treat your fungal infection at the source. PinPointe FootLaser offers visible improvement after a single treatment that continues to progress over the course of your therapy.

What can I expect during my nail fungus laser treatment?

Your PinPointe FootLaser treatment takes approximately 30 minutes and is completely painless. This is the safest, most effective treatment available for clearing yellow nails resulting from fungal infection.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Maislos develops a personalized approach to your nail fungus treatment plan. This strategy ensures the appropriate number of laser sessions are determined to manage or eliminate your fungal infection entirely.

While Dr. Maislos administers the laser, you might feel a comfortable warming sensation on your feet. There are no risks or side effects, and you can walk immediately after your session.

Vino Med Spa nail technicians are trained in podiatric medicine and will recommend you to a podiatrist if needed.
