What causes brittle nails?

Toenails that appear brittle, thickened, or curved often have a fungal infection.

A fungal infection, or onychomycosis, is an overgrowth of fungal organisms like mold or yeast that develop beneath, on top, or inside your toenail. Once infected, toenail fungus can spread to your other toes as well as your skin.

Fungal infection on your skin is called athlete’s foot.

What are the symptoms of nail fungus?

In addition to brittle toenails, a fungal infection can cause one or more of your nails to appear:

  • Thickened
  • Lined or ridged
  • Distorted in shape
  • Spotted or streaked
  • Yellowed or discolored nails

Toenail fungus can also create a foul smell at the infection site.

Who is at risk of nail fungus?

Onychomycosis is a very common and contagious condition that can affect anyone regardless of age or gender. However, several factors can increase your risk of infection, such as:

  • Sustaining injury to your nail or its surrounding skin
  • Allowing feet to remain moist or damp for extended periods
  • Going barefoot in communal areas like pools, gyms, or locker rooms
  • Having a weakened immune system, circulatory problems, or diabetes

As you age, your risk of toenail fungus also increases. This is because your nails grow drier and more brittle, leaving them more

How is nail fungus diagnosed and treated?

Dr. Maislos is an experienced podiatrist who performs a physical examination of your feet to confirm the cause of your brittle nails. He might also take a nail or skin sample.

While several methods are available to treat nail fungus, like oral and topical medications, Dr. Maislos usually recommends laser therapy with the PinPointe™ FootLaser® system.

Toenail fungal infections can be challenging to treat, but the PinPointe FootLaser system provides over 70% of patients with sustained improvement. This advanced technology is the first FDA-cleared laser for treating nail fungus. The laser’s controlled energy is delivered directly to your infection, leaving other tissue and skin in the area completely unharmed.

Unlike oral and topical antifungal medications that can take months, the PinPointe FootLaser system provides results after a single 30-minute session. It’s painless and has no risks.

Vino Med Spa nail technicians are trained in podiatric medicine and will recommend you to a podiatrist if needed.
