What causes nail discoloration?

Nails that appear yellow, green, black, or brown often have a fungal infection.

Onychomycosis, commonly known as a fungal infection, develops when you have an overgrowth of fungal organisms on, inside, or on top of your nail. This type of infection is due to mold or yeast organisms.

Nail discoloration isn’t the only sign of nail fungus. You might also experience:

  • Deep lines or ridges
  • Ugly or thickened nails
  • Nails that appear misshapen
  • A foul aroma in the infected area

Nail fungus can spread from a single nail to others and also affect your skin.

Why did I get nail fungus?

Anyone can get onychomycosis. This infection can be a result of fungal organisms on your body or because of those you come in contact with the environment.

Several health factors can increase your risk of developing a fungal infection, like having a weakened immune system, circulatory problems, or diabetes. The aging process also causes changes in your nails, leaving them more vulnerable to infection.

To reduce your risk of fungal infection, avoid walking barefoot in common areas like pools, gyms, or locker rooms, and keep your feet clean and dry.

How is nail fungus treated?

Dr. Maislos recommends laser therapy using the first FDA-cleared laser treatment for nail fungus.

The PinPointe™ FootLaser® is a cutting-edge system that treats fungal infections at the source. Instead of oral or topical antifungal medications, the PinPointe FootLaser penetrates the layers of your nail to kill the organisms causing your infection.

Not only is laser therapy painless, but it also provides a visible improvement in the treatment site after a single session. PinPointe FootLaser’s precise technology also ensures that only fungus is targeted, leaving your surrounding tissue undamaged.

What can I expect during my nail fungus laser treatment?

PinPointe FootLaser session with Dr. Maislos takes approximately 30 minutes.

Dr. Maislos tailors your nail fungus management and treatment plan to you during your initial consultation. This approach guarantees clinically proven results by determining the number of sessions required to clear up your nail discoloration and completely resolve your fungal infection.

During your laser session, you may feel a pleasant, warming sensation at the treatment site. There’s no pain or side effect, and you can walk immediately after your laser therapy session.

Vino Med Spa nail technicians are trained in podiatric medicine and will recommend you to a podiatrist if needed.
